Benefits of the ZEB

A new breed of boiler that’s redefining home heating, powered by electricity without the cost.

Greener than gas or oil

Did you know that 31% of household carbon emissions comes from home heating? Switching to the ZEB cuts 100% of these direct emissions, meaning improved air quality and a cleaner tomorrow.

Cheaper than electric boilers

Want to save the planet but without the cost? Choose the ZEB, a smart boiler that can store heat at the cheapest and greenest times, saving €1,000 per year for a typical home vs an electric boiler.

Easy to install, use & maintain

Looking for an easy way to go green? The ZEB works the same as your current boiler and can be installed in 1-2 days with minimal fuss and the added bonus of App control.

How does the ZEB work?

The ZEB is powered by electricity and works like a battery to store energy as heat until it is needed. Electric heating elements charge up a “core” inside the ZEB – storing a lot of energy in a small footprint.

Our patented heat-management technology then cleverly releases the heat to your radiators, underfloor heating and water tank when your thermostat calls for it.

Control your ZEB with the App

Take control of your ZEB from anywhere with the tepeo App. Get insights into the energy and carbon from your ZEB. Available on iOS and Android.

Power your ZEB with Electric Ireland’s Night Boost tariff

In the Heat Battery Trial, you can switch to Electric Ireland’s Night Boost tariff to access super low electricity prices for your ZEB.

  • Night boost provides two hours of super low-cost power from 02:00 to 04:00
  • The rest of the night is cheaper too – from 23:00 – 08:00
  • You’ll need to be an Electric Ireland customer and have a smart meter to get this tariff and join the trial.

How do I sign up?

Just complete our ZEB Home Check. We’ll see if the ZEB is a good fit for your home, and book a remote survey if it is.

FAQs

Who are tepeo?

tepeo was founded in 2018 to give customers a low cost, low carbon, smart and yet simple route off of fossil fuel heating.

Since then we’ve designed, built and tested many ways to create an efficient thermal storage solution for low carbon heating – all culminating in the ZEB.

We launched the ZEB in 2021 and are focused on bringing it to more customers across the UK as we grow our network of tepeoPRO installers and in developing new solutions to help even more homes transition away from gas and oil.

tepeo is here to help millions of homeowners heat their homes, not the planet.

Who are Electric Ireland?

Electric Ireland is the retail division of ESB, which was established in 1927. Previously known as ESB Customer Supply, we rebranded to Electric Ireland in 2012. We are Ireland’s leading energy provider, supplying electricity, gas and energy services to over 1.3 million households and businesses on the island of Ireland.

Who is eligible to join the trial?

You need to be a homeowner with full responsibility and authority for making changes to the heating system of your home. Your home must be suitable for the ZEB with a heating demand of <12,000kWh per year, a functioning central heating system and a suitable location for the ZEB that is accessible for delivery. You will also need to swap to Electric Ireland’s Night Boost tariff in order to join the trial. We will check eligibility during your remote survey and, if proceeding, during a home survey too. Full terms and conditions can be found here.

What is being tested in the trial?

the trial has two stages – first we’re looking at the house types, age, heating systems and heat demand from people who sign up for a survey. This will help to understand the suitability of the ZEB for homes across Ireland. Assuming this goes well, and we have a good range of properties registered, we’ll proceed to the installation and monitoring phase. This is all about testing the installation process and running the ZEB in Irish homes using Electric Ireland’s tariffs. The data captured will allow further modelling using real world data. The results of the trial will inform how best to provide heat batteries for homes across Ireland.

Is the trial free?

We are providing a special price for trialists, starting at just €1,500 for the installation of the ZEB and standard parts and works required for installation. Outside of the trial this would cost ~€10,000. If your home needs additional work not covered in the standard scope of installation for a ZEB, our installation partner can discuss this with you & it may be possible to complete additional works, at your cost, in order to join the trial.

How long is the trial?

We are aiming to have the installations completed by 30th September 2025 and will run the trial for 12 months until 1st October 2026. This will mean the trial will be a minimum of 12 months, but will start from the date of installation until the end date. We reserve the right to extend the trial, giving you written notice if we intend to do so, in order to capture more data to ensure we can gather the insights needed.

What is included in the installation?

We will provide the ZEB, delivery, ancillaries and a dedicated electrical supply for the ZEB as well as the installation, commissioning and electrical checks. We will not replace or upgrade radiators, primary pipework, hot water system or your home electrics if required for a safe, compliant installation. Wider upgrades to your heating or electrical system would be additional works undertaken at your cost if required for the install and something you wish to proceed with.

Will my heating bills increase?

This depends on your current heating system, fuel type and heating use. This is a trial to determine if the ZEB is a good solution in the Irish market given tariffs, housing types and customer preferences for the future of residential heating. It is therefore possible your bills will increase. We will provide an estimated running cost before installation, however this is necessarily only an estimate and we cannot guarantee running costs. You should only join the trial if the risk of increased energy bills is acceptable and understood.

What happens at the end of the trial?

The ZEB and any other equipment is yours to keep! You can change tariff if there are better options available and we will stop collecting data used solely for the trial or sharing data gathered for the purpose of the trial. If you want to remove the ZEB and replace it with a different heating system, we will disconnect and remove the ZEB free of charge; however, you will be responsible for the cost of installing a new system.

What happens if I want to leave the trial?

You can leave the trial if circumstances mean you are unable to continue participating (moving home for example). In this case, we will remove the ZEB and associated trial equipment free of charge and you will be responsible for replacing the ZEB with a new heating system. We reserve the right to charge for ZEB removal if you wish to leave the trial for convenience.
